Sweden to deploy jets for NATO Arctic mission

Sweden announced on Thursday that it will deploy fighter jets to patrol the area around Iceland and Greenland as part of NATO's 'Arctic Guardian' operation. 'This step enhances deterrence and protects our shared interests, contributing to the stability of a region of vital importance for Europe and transatlantic cooperation,' said Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in a statement. The alliance said on Wednesday it had launched a mission to bolster its presence in the Arctic, seeking to ease acute tensions within the alliance sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to acquire Greenland. Sweden will initially contribute to the 'Arctic Guardian' mission.
